Genzo is a Japanese bar and diner in North Sydney’s Walker Street Precinct, a four-part hospitality hub by Etymon Projects that also includes a bakery and wine bar, an artisanal providore and an LA-inspired restaurant and lounge.

The menu here is fun, mostly familiar and is designed to be eaten with sake. Sashimi, izakaya snacks and robata-grilled skewers anchor the offering. Genzo’s playful streak shows in dishes such as the avocado and Vegemite on rice cakes (a fancy riff on the lunchbox staple) and the Kitto Katto dessert, a five-layer chocolate cake inspired by the Kit Kat.

Genzo’s fun vibe extends to the space itself, which is big on colour: LED lights pop from the ceiling, and there are striking character illustrations. The aesthetic contrasts traditional with modern, and the open kitchen serves as a lively centrepiece.
