Fat Monk’s is an extension of the wildly successful Papaya Group that includes Papaya Thai (just a few doors along and also at Cammeray) and Bangkok Sidewalk in Kirribilli. What this collective does well is really fresh, fast and satisfying Thai food.

People will, and do, travel for the reliable and vibrant flavours of the peppercorn and basil stir-fry, the crunchy bite of the Thai style salads or the green curry, and on a Friday it’s not unusual for the take-away crowd to be happily queuing out the door.

Fat Monk’s wraps around a corner of the busy Military Road strip and sports the trademark chandelier and oversized basket of menus by the front door, as do each of other restaurants in the group, but there’s nothing chain-like about the quality and variety here.

It can be a bit of a squeeze on a busy night, but with friendly service, vibrant flavours and the fun (if a tad politically incorrect) title, why not dine-in under the beneficent eyes of the monk?
