Melbourne’s most successful restaurant is headed north. Owner Chris Lucas first announced the move in May 2015, telling us, “We looked in many areas throughout Sydney, but ultimately it was the building itself which drove the location decision.
“Much like the 100-year-old building in Flinders Lane that houses Chin Chin in Melbourne, I instantly loved the Griffiths Teas building. [It] excites me from a design point of view and the opportunity to breathe life back into such a prominent and significant building is exciting, too.”
If any team can do it, it’s these guys. The original spot opened in mid-2011 and even on a cold, rainy weeknight, it’s still beset with hour-long queues. Melburnians and tourists alike can’t get enough of the bustling atmosphere and moreish Thai menu by star chef Benjamin Cooper.
Cooper will set up the kitchen in Surry Hills; and Craig Hemmings (ex-general manager at Guillaume), will run the venue. Chris Matters, a former manager at Merivale, has signed on as general manager at the Lucas Group. He’s overseeing all its operations in Sydney and Melbourne, including the roll-out of Chin Chin in Surry Hills.
