Bathers’ is a showcase of the things that Sydney does really well. There’s the unspoiled view over peaceful and sparkly Balmoral beach, the restoration of a beautiful historic beach changing pavilion (hence the name) and the internationally acclaimed celebrity chef, Serge Dansereau.
The deco style pavilion building is split into two, with the restaurant to the left as you enter and the more casual cafe to the right. Both share the stunning sand-brushed view and make the most of the play of light on water, with huge windows and splash-of-blue themes reflecting the beachy surrounds.
The elegant restaurant has a focus on French-inspired flavours, while the more relaxed cafe sways to a Mediterranean tune, complemented by both cocktails and coffee. Breakfast is a well kept secret here – it’s when you can really feel at home without all the trappings of fine dining, while the morning sun sparkles on the water and waves literally lap at the door.
It might be a great place to bring tourists, but it’s also a place that keeps locals flocking back. And with the owner/chef himself clearly (and often visibly) in the house, it’s all about passion as opposed to pretension.
