Beyond the large windows of a Victorian turn-of-the-century structure, Pej Zidei and Belle Clarke welcome each visitor to Hunter’s Corner as they might an old friend – encouraging locals to feel at home in their breezy space on the corner of Pitt and Redfern streets.

The cafe’s interior is ornamented with keepsakes from the duo’s travels. Moroccan lamps dangle over the counter, while curios from Mexico, Philippines, Vanuatu and the UK adorn the walls. Glance upward and you’ll notice fragments of the former corner store’s roller doors, circa 1950, which remain intact.

You’d think Belle and Pej spend enough time with their customers, yet the couple invites patrons to join them for extra-curricular activities too. Free PT sessions in nearby Redfern Park, creative workshops, coffee tastings and cooking demonstrations are a few of the community-oriented offerings.

The words “locally sourced” are bandied about often, but the fresh ingredients from Hunter’s Corner’s evolving menu come from Mickey’s Fruit & Veg across the street; Alexandria-based Sonoma Bakery supplies the bread; and Mecca Coffee provides the beans.

Artist Scott Marsh is behind the pro-marriage equality mural on the building’s Redfern Street frontage, featuring former prime minister Tony Abbott as both bride and groom.
