Don Pedros dishes out simple, zesty, crowd-pleasing Mexican fare. Not too long this backstreet venue closed to Paddington Markets housed fine-diner The Stables. You would hardly recognise it now. The polished marble walls have been replaced with bright pink paint, specially created artwork, cacti and Mexican-imported candles.
The ingredients at Don Pedros do the talking – flavours lean on lime, a healthy hit of green chilli and not much else. There’s lots of seafood: think tacos with soft shell crab, crisp prawn and raw tuna; whole Barramundi; and fish-of-the-day ceviche. You can get American slow-cooked pork ribs too along with vegetarian options such as mushroom tacos and cheesy tostadas and quesadillas.
A pre- and post-dinner shot of tequila is heavily encouraged by the team – the house brand is Don Julio, but it stocks many more varieties should the feeling take you. There’s also wine, beer and a cocktail menu that features five types of Margaritas (including a chilli-infused version).
The welcoming casual cantina vibe has quickly attracted a following, and there are rewards for loyalty. Kids under five eat free on Wednesdays; the earlier you arrive on Family Friday, the cheaper the tacos; and there’s an all-you-can-eat taco and tequila fiesta on the first Thursday of every month.
