At Racine (which means “root” in French), the philosophy is to keep things simple. Owners Shaun and Willa Arantz believe that quality ingredients combined with tried and true practices are what keep customers coming back for more.
Open for six years now, the bakery is a favourite among locals and visitors alike. The queue for coffee and golden croissants is out the door most mornings. The pastries pay respect to traditional French baking, but with a modern twist: a big part of what makes Racine so exciting is its adventurousness.
Instead of an almond croissant, you’ll find a pistachio-cream version. For Valentine’s Day they created a “love” croissant with swirls and flakes of rosy-pink pastry filled with fresh raspberry jam and whipped mascarpone. It was so popular the locals demanded they bring it back and it’s now on the menu for good. (Hot tip: get in early to make sure you don’t miss out.)
