Combining creativity together with innovative technique, Melbourne bar Der Raum has created an impeccable standard of cocktail making, which is recognised worldwide. But for all the tricks that this bar has up its sleeves, sometimes less really is more.

When we asked them to offer us a cocktail that’s easy to create at home, Der Raum proposed the refreshing and approachable Americano.

Created in the 1860s, the Americano is a classic Italian cocktail, which carefully combines Campari, sweet vermouth and soda water. A balanced option, highlighted by its sweet body, subtle carbonation and bitter finish, the Americano is a perfect example of an aperitif.

The Der Raum Americano

• 30ml sweet vermouth (we suggest Carpano Antica Formula, but any sweet vermouth you can get your hands on will work).

• 30ml Campari

• Schweppes soda water

• ice

• orange slice to garnish

To mix the Americano, build all the ingredients over two or three large cubes of ice in a highball glass. Finish by topping with Schweppes soda water and garnish with a slice of fresh orange.
