With palm-leaf style wooden fans, you’ll crave peeled grapes and watermelon cocktails as you enter the new Collaroy Hotel. Luckily, they’re serving one of those things in sweet glass jars over the bar. The two-month-old renovations are a welcomed change to the northern beaches club, with a fully refurbished bar and dining area for a new wave of patrons, and old favourites as well.
The Waugh Hotel Group has revamped The Surf Rock Hotel into a friendly, open and sophisticated environment, steering away from the loud Friday night scene.
Fish-print bar stools and vintage Hawaiian posters frame the beach-long views from the upstairs bistro. Fishermen’s rope grids the glass ceilings and the afternoon rays illuminate grey ironbark timber and brushed-brass light fittings. To complete the clubhouse aura, the coloured caps of local surf lifesaving teams are on display along the staircase. The ladies’ is baby pink, complete with framed vintage swimwear on the walls.
Head chef Ben Varela is dishing up barramundi fish tacos with chipotle sauce as the perfect chaser for the seared sesame tuna with ponzu mayo and wasabi pea dust. The seafood theme spreads from tempura rock prawns to chilli spanner crab linguini. For a meaty alternative a list of cuts “From The Paddock” is on offer. Our pick is the scotch fillet with chimmi churri, and of course, the famous waffle fries.
A local pinot grigio from Two Italian Boys is on the wine list, with many other cocktails and carafes to share, and 14 beers on tap. For a balmy night, don’t go past Roy’s famous homemade syrups to mix with Ketel One Vodka – we made a beeline for the lemongrass, chilli and coconut flesh concoction.
