Ask a beer nerd where they like to drink and there’s two pubs they’ll always mention – the Local Taphouse and The Union Hotel. The Newtown local has 22 taps and even more bottles of both Australia’s finest and oddest, as well as some innovations from overseas. Completionists be warned: the total list of options is several hundred long. It’s not just beer, either – the bar stocks 20-plus gins (Australian dominated) and 30-plus whisky options.
The pub’s grub options aren’t quite as diverse or progressive – they involve mainly burgers and slabs of meat – but they fit the relaxed vibe of the old building. Despite the impressive range of brews this doesn’t feel like a beer pub, as in it’s not exclusively run by those glued to the local brewing scene. Families fill up the bistro, scraggy-bearded Newtownians queue for pool games, football fans gather to watch A League and AFL for the away games, and local bands fill the front bar with their friends and followers every other weekend.
