Features
Popular with cinemagoers spilling out of the nearby Hayden Theatre Orpheum for an after-screening snack, the cuisine at Radio Cairo is a melting pot of exotic fare. Expect a taste of Africa with Caribbean undertones, a sprinkling of Cuba and even a dash of Indian flavouring.
Eclecticism reigns from the dishes to décor here. African props adorn the walls, Turkish lanterns hang overhead and a gilt-framed television plays silver-screen classics in black and white. Radio Cairo’s energy is undeniable and its unexpectedness is a huge part of its charm.
The dishes are far-flung but full-throttled in flavour and boast energising aromas. Each dish pops with flavour from the legendary New Orleans-style Cajun popcorn shrimp, to spiced, thick-cut Afro fries with paprika mayo. Tunisian slow-roasted (five-hour) lamb shanks fall off the bone, while the Mozambique piri piri tiger prawns bring a wallop of heat. For dessert, try a scoop of green-tea ice-cream or blueberry crème-brulee.
World music and a laidback vibe complete the Africana experience and if you haven’t booked, sit at the bar while you wait.
