Coffee Alchemy is as unpretentious as they come. Painting a very modest veneer for the public eye, its drawn blinds and tinted windows seem to actively deter the curiosity of anyone who might stumble across it. If not for the procession of coffee enthusiasts filing out its doorway, the cafe would blend seamlessly into the industrial streetscape of Marrickville.
The espresso bar itself occupies a small space at the front of the famed roastery. With as much space devoted to staff as customers, a few seats are about the only decor you’ll find. But whatever Coffee Alchemy lacks in terms of aesthetic charm, it makes up for via the sheer brilliance of its singular product: coffee.
Owner Hazel de los Reyes is a well-respected figure within the Australian coffee scene, and for good reason. As well as an Australian “cupping” title (the tasting process by which roasters grade and categorise coffee), her list of accolades includes a number of prestigious barista and roasting titles. The huge range of brew methods and meticulously sourced selection of coffees are a testament to her talents.
