Flood Street Carousel

7:00am - 3:30pm
1 Lords Road Leichhardt 2040

On Saturday mornings, Flood Street Carousel is alive with chatter, children’s laughter and the clinking of cutlery. There’s all the joy of a fairground at this aptly named corner cafe. A bold carnival mask mural adorns the back wall, and a retired carousel horse sits among the tables.

After two decades working as a railway station master, owner Dan Gerelli decided he was sick of “working for the man” and took over the cafe with his wife, Cal Gerelli.

With customer service in his blood, and Cal a wiz in the kitchen, the change was a natural fit. They wanted to make the place more family friendly, so they added children’s toys and books.

The all-day brunch menu has a Middle Eastern influence. It incorporates ingredients such as haloumi, labna, sumac, and dukkah. Cal sources the fruit and vegetables daily from Flemington Markets, and makes the salsas and relishes herself.

Cheeky subheadings on the menu elicit a grin: there are “Salads that you make friends with” and “Brioche toast with topping for kids of all ages”. The cafe uses Sensory Lab coffee and organic Tea Craft teas. A takeaway menu is also available.
