Features
The Hook is an oyster bar in Kings Cross by Dave and Amy Spanton, the team that transformed two of the neighbourhood’s legendary cafes into two of its best bars – Piccolo Bar and Vermuteria.
With their saloon-style digs, the team are bringing “oyster culture” back to Bayswater Road. Expect freshly shucked oysters with dressings such as classic mignonette and a signature Bloody Mary hot sauce. And, in a throwback to the ’80s, grilled oysters served four ways. Heftier items include an American-style smash burger and an LP’s hot dog.
Given who’s behind the place, you can be sure the drinks are no afterthought. Behind the 23-person horseshoe bar is a Guinness tap pouring the black stuff and a bumper selection of champagnes. Classic cocktails in line with the venue’s historic feel include the Martini, French 75 and a 1940s-style Hurricane.
Dave Spanton spent three months overhauling the old Izgara space, weaving in inspiration from trips to Ireland and the UK, and to the United States where the dive bar is king. Acclaimed designer Michael Delany – who assisted the team on Piccolo Bar and Vermuteria – returned to execute the vision. A nautical theme runs throughout, and a baby grand piano hosts players most nights.
