Ocean Swims, Life Drawing and Wine Bars: The Sydney Spots Powering Body, Mind and Connection

In Sydney, wellbeing isn’t a single pursuit – it’s a patchwork of rituals, places and moments that meet you where you’re at.
It might be laps in the ocean at first light, a midweek pottery class or discovering your competitive streak on a pickleball court. Maybe it’s hot yoga followed by a bowl of hot chips, knowing they can co-exist in healthy balance. Or taking a nap because you’ve been overwhelmed, instead of forcing your way through the decision paralysis. It’s about knowing when to do things on your own, and when to be around other people.
Because in a city like Sydney, feeling well doesn’t come down to step count – it’s built from the small, everyday rituals that help you feel your very best. And you need health insurance that supports the kind of wellness you need. ahm understands that wellness is simply whatever makes you feel good: whether that’s through fitness, mindfulness, creativity or connection.
Here are some of our favourite places and spaces in Sydney for building strength, resetting mentally and staying socially connected.
Fitness, movement and recovery
One way to wake the body is to slip into the pool at the iconic Bondi Icebergs Pool and join the locals for a refreshing morning ritual of laps at sunrise. In Coogee, Wylie’s Baths offers a slower counterpoint. Heritage-listed and perched above the water, it’s as suited to an easy swim as it is to soaking up some sunshine on the deck, with an on-site kiosk and massage, yoga, Pilates and tai chi on offer.
Closer to town, Studio Mouvoir focuses on controlled, intentional movement on the rooftop of Paramount House. Or lean into a music-led release at Groove Therapy, and dance like no one’s watching. Afterwards, head to Capybara Bathing for a more restorative reset, with hot and cold therapy on offer.
Holistic wellbeing and creative pursuits
Not all forms of wellbeing have to be physical – sometimes it’s about making something with your hands. At Clay Sydney, the slow, tactile process of pottery invites focus and patience.
Elsewhere, art-led spaces like Art Cafe, tucked inside Cork and Chroma in Surry Hills, offer a low-pressure way to switch off. Here, you “order” a creative project – painting, collage, beading and more – instead of food, working through it at your own pace with materials provided and artists on hand if needed. Otherwise, head to Doodler, a life-drawing studio in Marrickville that runs regular weekly sessions of uninterrupted time to sketch or paint.
Neighbourhood hangouts
Wellbeing doesn’t always look like taking a class or upskilling. Sometimes it’s as simple as a familiar seat and a good pour. Newtown’s wine bar and bottle shop Famelia has quickly become one of those places. It offers a changing list that champions women winemakers, alongside a concise offering of cheeses, meats and dips. Meanwhile, Where’s Nick leans into small-batch, independent pours across wine, beer and spirits. If something stands out, you can pick up a bottle next door at Goblin Wine Shop, while the rotating plate du jour keeps things interesting.
If an unpretentious pub vibe is more what you’re after, The Bat & Ball Hotel and its ludicrously generous saucy slab of lasagne (that’s just $17 every Tuesday) is one you can’t pass up. Or check out Cricketers Arms Hotel: the Crix’s downstairs bar feels like an extension of a home living room, while upstairs Chez Crix is more like a dining room and leans into French-leaning fare.
Community activities
Joining in on shared experiences like live music or social sport is another way people stay well, in spaces where movement and connection intersect. At The Vanguard, an institution for live performance, expect everything from sultry burlesque to high-octane shows, all in an intimate setting. Nearby, The Trocadero Room moves between DJs, comedy and improv jazz. It’s the kind of place to catch a new favourite band, then stay on for a boogie into the early hours.
For something more active, House of Pickle, with locations across Sydney including the ICC Sydney Event Deck, brings people together over social pickleball. The fully serviced bar and central setting make it easy to turn a quick game into an evening, while open play sessions and $20 intro classes mean anyone can join in.
