At Temu Kangen, a Haymarket spot from the Medan Ciak team, Indonesian dishes arrive from all over, with emphasis on North Sumatra’s Medan, West Sumatra’s Padang, and Java’s Surabaya. Matching the large Muslim population in this part of the world, Kangen’s menu is halal.

You’ll find plenty of food wrapped in tradition (and banana leaves): red-hot sambals and generous serves of nasi kuning are common. You can choose your proteins, vegetables and sambals from the stocked-full bain-marie.

The fit-out is no frills, no fuss. Much of the ordering process is customisable and DIY. Grab a drink you haven’t tried before from the self-service fridge – you’ll need one to ward off the spice.
