There are three things you absolutely must order at Nanjing Dumpling: duck, dumplings and flaky sesame rolls stuffed with pork and spring onion. They’re the specialty dishes of Nanjing, the historic riverside city just west of Shanghai.
Nanjing’s most famous culinary export is salted duck, a simple but difficult-to-make brined duck that has a delicate Hainan-chicken-like appeal. You can find that dish here, and duck dishes dominate the rest of the menu too. There’s duck fried rice, delicate duck noodle soups and duck offal (every part of the bird is used here).
It’s not all duck, though. This tiny diner is also one of the only places in Sydney to get Nanjing-style xiao long bao, a doughier and slightly sweeter version of Shanghai’s most famous soup dumplings. Another standout is a beef noodle soup that’s reminiscent of pho – it’s a popular dish in Nanjing’s Islamic community.
