Mexican cuisine is true all-weather food. In summer, there’s nothing better than knocking back a few fish tacos with a Margarita or cerveza in hand. In winter – especially in full-blown lockdown, when comfort is a priority – Mexican food’s winning combo of carbs and sinus-clearing spice is tough to beat. Then there’s the added bonus that many of Mexico’s most famous dishes – tacos, burritos, quesadillas – are inherently a good fit for takeaway (we have our friend the tortilla to thank for that user-friendliness).

Most of Sydney’s Mexican restaurants have gracefully handled the transition to takeaway-and-delivery-only. These are the best.

Rosa Cienfuegos Tamaleria

Sydney’s undisputed queen of Mexican cuisine has put the whole tamaleria online. Order those famous tamales, tacos and burritos ready-made, or grab frozen meat packs (al pastor, chicken tinga and beef suadero), corn tortillas, house-made salsas and desserts to whip up a real fiesta. Loads of imported Mexican dry goods, drinks and sweets are also available from the tamaleria’s website.

Carbon Mexican Wood Fire

This Mexican joint is open for takeaway from Thursday through Sunday. There are quesadillas, tacos and booze for sure, but why not spring for one of Carbon’s custom fiestas? Choose four taco fillings and a quesadilla flavour to go with guacamole, charred corn and a half-litre Margarita flagon, all for $100. That’s a two-person job, but there are four-person and bottomless editions too. Pre-order for pickup and delivery here.

288 Bondi Road, Bondi

Just like its sister restaurant Carbon, Sonora in Potts Point is doing takeaway from Thursday to Sunday. The same standout tacos, quesadillas and Margaritas are all here, plus Tecate and a tight selection of funky wines to go with them. But we (strongly) suggest a Fiesta pack, complete with a flagon of Margarita. Pre-order here.

Bad Hombres

The Hombres are back on the takeaway train. This spot is entirely plant-based, but its tacos, burritos and mains – such as the roast cauliflower with cashew crema, salsa verde and a side of corn tortillas – will make you forget all about the meat. The pre-batched Margaritas will also help with that – they come in classic and chilli incarnations. Choose pick-up or delivery here.

40 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills

Newtown’s best (and only) cantina has made its entire menu available to take away. There are plenty of sides, salsas and larger dishes, such as enchiladas stuffed with pulled chicken and smothered in salsa roja, to keep you going. Plus: sangria, Margaritas and a couple of boozy frosés too. Make sure you order on Uber Eats nice and early – this cantina can sell out.

Flying Fajita Sistas

The Sistas’ entire menu is on Uber Eats – including the fajita plate: chargrilled strips of meat (your choice) or vegetables, plus beans, rice, sour cream, guac and pico de gallo. Fill out that order with some nachos and house-made dips while you’re at it. From 5pm, Wednesday to Sunday.

65 Glebe Point Road, Glebe

Try chipotle chicken tacos with guacamole and blue-corn chips, corn ribs, jalapeno poppers, patatas bravas, a watermelon salad and a Margarita cheesecake for just $80.

Don Pedros

Don Pedros’ zesty and vibrant menu of crowd-pleasing fare is up for pre-order, as is a build-your-own taco box just shy of $50. There’s a sizeable drinks offering too, with a nice selection of imported Mexican lagers such as Negra Modelo and Pacifico. Best of all? The Don is slashing 20 per cent off your order when you pick it up. Delivery to the city and eastern suburbs is also available.

This feisty Balmain cantina isn’t going into lockdown quietly. It’s doing every kind of Margy imaginable, plus an epic list of tacos starring crispy baja fish, lamb barbacoa and Yucatán-style mushroom. You can order tacos individually, but a tasting board will get you across the best of them for $40. Straight-up brunch (think chia bowls, pancakes and eggs) is also on the hob Friday through Sunday. There’s also a food menu that involves starters such as fish tacos and larger mains, including a 700-gram, slow-roasted lamb shoulder.
