Best Takeaway Mexican in Sydney

Mexican cuisine is true all-weather food. In summer, there’s nothing better than knocking back a few fish tacos with a Margarita or cerveza in-hand. In winter, when comfort is a priority, Mexican food’s winning combo of carbs and sinus-clearing spice is tough to beat. Then there’s the added bonus that many of Mexico’s most famous dishes – tacos, burritos, et al – are an inherently good fit for takeaway (we have our friend, the tortilla, to thank for that user-friendliness).

Many of Sydney’s Mexican restaurants are kicking on with the takeaway and delivery options that made them a lockdown hit. These are some of our favourites.

  • Sydney’s undisputed queen of Mexican cuisine has put the whole tamaleria online. Order those famous tamales, tacos and burritos ready-made, or grab frozen meat packs (al pastor, chicken tinga and beef suadero), corn tortillas, house-made salsas and desserts to whip up a real fiesta. Loads of imported Mexican dry goods, drinks and sweets are also available from the tamaleria’s website.

  • A tight selection of Sonora’s mains – including charred Sinaloa-style chicken; and barbeque eggplant with oaxaca cheese, salsa, pomegranate and macadamias – are available for pickup or delivery by Uber Eats. Divide them up, fill your tortilla (they come supplied) and devour with gusto. There’s a couple sides and a Mexican flan for dessert, too.

  • The Hombres are entirely plant-based, but their tacos, burritos and mains – such as the roast cauliflower with cashew crema, salsa verde and a side of corn tortillas – will make you forget all about the meat (the pre-batched Margaritas will also help with that). A limited menu is available throughout January, and you can choose pick-up or delivery here.

  • Newtown’s best (and only) cantina has a tidy selection from its menu available to take away. There are plenty of sides, salsas and larger dishes, such as enchiladas stuffed with pulled chicken and smothered in salsa roja, to keep you going. Make sure you order on Uber Eats nice and early – this cantina can sell out.

  • The whopping tortas from this Mexican cafe are primed for the takeaway trade. Tackle the chicken slathered with achiote sauce, black beans and pickled red onion on a fresh baked roll, then wash it down with a coconut horchata. Order pickup and delivery here.

  • These tequila and mezcal masters are going all out on their takeaway offering. Not only can you order highlights from the menu (plus beers, wines and Margaritas), there are also complete cook-at-home kits with all the gear required for a four-course Mejico meal. Try brisket tacos with guacamole and blue-corn chips, empanadas, corn ribs, patatas bravas, a watermelon salad and a Margarita cheesecake for just $80.

  • Tequila Mockingbird is flying into the new year with a stellar takeaway offering. Sides, street tacos and flamed-kissed mains are up for grabs, but the taco kits offer real bang for your peso. Choose either pork belly ($47) or slow-roasted lamb shoulder ($65) with all the trimmings included, plus a side of fried potatoes or charred broccolini for good measure.

  • This feisty Balmain cantina does an epic list of tacos starring crispy baja fish, lamb barbacoa and Yucatán-style mushroom. You can order them individually, but a tasting board will get you across the best of them for around $40. Straight-up brunch (think smoothies and banana pancakes) is also on the hob Friday through Sunday. Order the lot here.
