Everyone in Sydney has their favourite dumpling place – whether it's a stripped-back affair that does BYO wine, an upmarket spot with white tablecloths, or a go-to late-night joint. Of course, it’ll be a while before any of us can cram into our favourite dumpling diner again. Thankfully, we still have the dumplings.

At some of these restaurants, dumplings are the headline act – and you can get them delivered (either ready-to-eat or frozen) whenever the spirit moves you. At other spots, the dumpling dishes are supporting – but scene-stealing – actors that are just too good not to mention.

Sydney's in lockdown for the first time in more than a year and it's the dead of winter. So dumplings are just what the doctor ordered (as well as staying at home). These are the best options we've found.

It will take more than a lockdown to unseat Mr Wong as one the city’s best dumpling joints. The daily dim sum platter – in all its colourful, steamy splendour – is available to order for pick-up. Swathes of the restaurant’s regular, cantonese-inspired menu is up too – char siu barbeque pork, Singapore noodles and special fried rice will be your intimate partners now.

Yang’s Dumplings

All of the dumplings at this Shanghai-style shop are worthwhile, but sheng jian bao – the bestseller – is a highlight: it's a crisp-bottomed, doughy dumpling filled with soupy minced pork. It's like a blend between a xiao long bao and a classic potsticker, and it's addictive. Call 8057 7109 for pick-up, or delivery is available through most apps.

9/11-15 Deane Street, Burwood

Queen Chow Manly Wharf

The best thing about Queen Chow is that there’s one either side of the bridge. Better still, both are open for takeaway. Enmore’s dumpling department is limited to the daily steamed dim sum offering, but Manly is making a range of four-piece platters. Choose steamed pork shumai, jade seafood-filled, or pan-fried chicken and chive dumplings. Pre-order here.

Dumpling and Noodle House

It says it all on the tin, really. It's all about dumplings and noodles here. Boiled, steamed and fried dumplings are all available (go for the fried lamb ones). Call (02) 9326 9639 for pick-up, and you can find it on most delivery platforms.

Nanjing Dumpling

This one specialises in classic dishes from Nanjing – especially the salted duck – but it’s hard to look past the tidy dumpling selection on Doordash. It includes pan-fried beef or steamed crab and pork-filled numbers. A hefty chunk of the regular dine-in menu is available for delivery, too.

63-69 Dixon Street, Haymarket

Dumplings & Beer

This is another one of those it's-all-in-the-name places. It specialises in dumplings and beer. All of the classics are represented – pork and cabbage; pork, prawn and chive; chicken dim sum – but there's also a very nice range of gluten-free dumplings. Also worthwhile: the bao sliders. Order takeaway here, or delivery via Deliveroo.

Shop 2 9 Ward Avenue, Potts Point

Palace Chinese Restaurant

Not only is this CBD giant doing most of its yum cha to-go, it’s also selling a whole range of frozen dim sum. While we’d rather be spinning a lazy Susan and perusing the trolleys, this is far and away the next best thing. Available on most of the major delivery apps.

Xing Xing Sichuan Dish

Sichuan food is spicy, pungent and a bonafide remedy for winter in lockdown. The fiery menu here, including its Chengdu-style dumplings, can be ordered for pick-up. Simply call the restaurant on 0450 865 508.

42a Dixon Street, Haymarket

Din Tai Fung

Celebrity chef Adam Liaw swears that dumplings travel better than any other takeaway food. That’s good news for those with a lockdown hankering for Din Tai Fung’s world-beating xiao long bao. These parcels of soup-filled wonder can be yours, piping hot or frozen, along with the rest of the menu. Order here.

Dainty Sichuan

If the calibre of its Chonqing-style spicy noodles are anything to go by, the dumplings at Dainty Sichuan’s World Square outpost are probably worth a gander. A range of wonton dishes, soups and stews are also up on Menulog, for pick-up and delivery.

10/19b World Square 644 George Street, Sydney

New Shanghai Westfield

For the time being at least, you won’t have to queue-up with a large group of dumpling fans to receive the goods from this pinnacle of the genre. A selection of nine steamed or pan-fried favourites is ready to roll on most of the major delivery platforms. Our pick? Go for the fish dumplings.
