The Best Vegan Restaurants in Sydney

Updated 1 month ago

Vegan food has never been more popular in Sydney. And if we're talking about the higher end of dining, there's never been a better time to be vegan. Bentley Group’s Yellow offers one of the most exciting plant-based menus in the country, and Shannon Martinez of Smith & Daughters is currently overseeing the menu at Alibi. But when it comes to the everyday stuff (pizza, burgers, pho), we’re pretty spoilt for choice on that front, too. Not all of these places are strictly vegan, but you can bet all of them have a serious menu of vegan options.

  • Sydney's first fine-dining restaurant devoted to plants also offers five- and seven-course set vegan menus with matched wines.

  • The Ovolo Hotel's in-house restaurant was set up with help from renowned chef Mathew Kenney, who's been instrumental in popularising vegan food in the United States. Try the kimchi dumplings with red cabbage puree and ginger foam.

  • This Mexican diner's menu is entirely plant-based, and it's all the better for it. If you're a veg-lover and a fan of Mexican flavours, this is the spot for you. When your tortilla's loaded with pastor-style mushrooms, pico de gallo and pineapple; you won't even notice the meat's gone.

  • This pizzeria was well respected and established before it went full vegan (well, almost fully) in 2015. Step in for classic Neapolitan pizzas made with nut-based cheeses.

  • A colourful vegan-friendly pasta and spritz bar.

  • An all-vegan Thai restaurant with “fish” curry and a special take on “Buffalo wings”.

  • In the old Redfern Continental space, find a breezy front bar serving casual day-to-night bites and an intimate back room with a fancy-yet-accessible diner. The kitchen follows a minimum-waste ethos, and you can get Australiana cocktails and budget-friendly meals.

  • A two-level diner influenced by the nameless street food stalls that sit under overpasses in India. Visit for the classic pakoras and chai, then come back for the jaffles with potatoes and peanut chutney, and lentil stews.

  • Buzzing Bootleg Italian does “bootleg” plant-based versions of Italian classics. The whole menu – from fluffy dough balls with garlic butter to cacio e pepe and lasagne – is vegan. Don’t forget to order a serve of incredibly convincing tiramisu.
