In June news broke that the world’s most high-profile restaurant awards were coming to Melbourne. Just confirmed: the World’s 50 Best Restaurants will be hosted at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton on April 5, 2017.
This will be the second time since the awards began in 2002 (the first list was published in Restaurant magazine) that they are being held somewhere other than London. This year they were held in New York.
In partnership with Tourism Australia, the series will bring together the world’s best chefs, restaurateurs and sommeliers for an event program that will run from April 1 to 7.
A number of visiting chefs, yet to be confirmed, will host masterclasses with the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival next year. Expect those to sell out as quickly as Noma’s Sydney pop-up did.
The 2016 World’s Best Restaurant was Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana. Melbourne’s Attica placed at number 33 and Sydney’s Quay just made the list at number 98.
