Quay, the Sydney Harbour fine diner that elegantly and consistently refutes the restaurant-with-a-view cliché, is the first Australian restaurant named in the 2017 World’s 50 Best Restaurants List.
A three-time winner of best restaurant in Australasia, Quay came in at number 95 in this year’s announcement of restaurants 51–100. (The title of World's 50 Best is a misnomer since the annual list includes 100 restaurants.) The 2017 ranking sees Peter Gilmore's restaurant climb three places from its 2016 ranking of 98 and marks the restaurant’s ninth year on the influential dining countdown.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be on the list again this year,” says chef Peter Gilmore. “It’s just such a huge privilege to be listed amongst such icons of the industry. We’re also incredibly grateful to the Quay team who work so hard every day. They’re the reason we’ve made it onto the list again.”
In addition to celebrating Quay retaining its position on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants List, The Fink Group – the restaurant’s owner – has announced the harbourside dining room will be refurbished in 2018.
As the world awaits the announcement of the rest of the list next Wednesday night in Melbourne, observers have plenty to discuss around the water cooler. Does this mean that Dan Hunter’s Birregurra fine diner Brae (last year ranked at number 65), has broken into the main list? And where will Ben Shewry’s Attica – Australia’s current top-ranked restaurant on the list – fare this year? And might we see more Australian restaurants – names such as Sepia (a former one to watch winner), Orana and Africola come to mind – force their way into the list?
