Mark your calendars: the annual World Class Cocktail Week is back for another run of parties, pairings, tastings and masterclasses, led by Sydney’s best bartenders.
Between May 7 and 13, more than 40 events will be held across the city. Highlights include a mobile three-course meal at the Bondi Roaming Dinner, with each dish and matching cocktail served at a different restaurant on the same block; an Italian Happy Hour, complete with aperitivo, mortadella and meatballs, at Maybe Frank; and tequila cocktails paired with house-popped and flavoured popcorn at The Push.
The week will draw on the skill and creativity that goes into cocktails, minus the posturing. Paul Hammond, of Circular Quay’s Bulletin Place, says the annual event helps dispel the myth you need to be a connoisseur to enjoy them.
“In the last five to ten years, the amount of knowledge and attention going into bartending has boomed,” says Hammond. “This event is a good way to show there is still that level of understanding between the bartenders and the customers.”
Last year, 127 World Class Cocktail Week events took place nationwide, across three consecutive weeks. This year – in its biggest showing yet – the event is running for the same week in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, starting on May 7 and finishing on World Cocktail Day, May 13.
The program runs in the lead-up to the annual international World Class Bartender of the Year competition, where the best across the globe compete for the title of the world’s best bartender for 2017. The global final will be held in Mexico City later this year.
Closer to home, Hammond says World Class Cocktail Week is a way to celebrate the universal appeal of cocktails in a local setting.
“There’s a niche who are enthusiasts, who would be drinking cocktails anyway and are already aware of the culture and history,” says Hammond. “But the week is also about inviting people who don’t normally drink cocktails to try new drinks and sample the culture behind them.”
