“A good appetite needs no sauce”, says the Polish proverb. It’s a bit the same with pierogi, Poland’s famous savoury dumplings. “A good dollop of sour cream really adds to the pleasure, though,” says Adam Wieczorkowski, who, along with his mother Kasia, owns and manages the new Woollahra eatery and ‘delikatesy’, Wieczorkowski. Sublime fresh pierogi is just one of the specialities they’re serving to grateful crowds.

“We’re meeting a lot of Europeans who live in the east, but it’s also great to see customers who aren’t familiar with Polish food coming in and enjoying it so much,” says Wieczorkowski.

With a cafe and deli housed in the front of the building, a glass dining room and a deck out the back, Wieczorkowski offers breakfast, brunch and a bistro-style lunch menu.

Along with Polish fare, Wieczorkowski serves a wide variety of contemporary, European-style dishes. “Our original plans were for a simple little sandwich shop with perfect coffee,” says Kasia “but that idea grew to this, where we can share the full Polish experience.”

“Coming to Wieczorkowski, we hope, is like being welcomed into our home,” says Adam. “That’s one of the reason’s we’ve put our name to it”.

Englishman Leigh James heads up the kitchen alongside Swede, Henrik Ahlen. Wieczorkowski also has a Polish food expert at hand who works with the pair in producing three varieties of pierogi, the golabki (veal cabbage rolls), barszcz (traditional beetroot soup) and goulash.

Wieczorkowski’s sweets selection changes daily, but Polish cheesecake is a permanent fixture.

“The Krakowian cheesecake, with a really thin biscuit pastry, lemon rind and sultanas is our favourite” says Kasia Wieczorkowski’s.

Paczki (plum jam-filled Polish donuts) are delivered fresh every two days, but sell out quickly.

The Wieczorkowski experience extends to online where the deli items, including pickles, sauces and specialist ingredients, are available to purchase from anywhere in Australia.
