The latest addition to brighten the monotone of Alexandria’s industrial landscape is Vicinity Dining, a sleek dining and bar establishment opened earlier this month by the Prospero Group (known for their work with Manta and La Grillade).

Located across the road from The Grounds, at the corner of Bourke Road and Collin Street, Vicinity occupies a grand 600 square metre space that is split into several distinct areas. Think outdoor wooden benches, shaded by leafy green trees from the footpath, which wrap around an expansive airy dining room filled with modern furniture and fittings. Think high back armchairs, burnt orange leather lounges below, a wall of multiple television screens, recycled wood communal tables and hanging wired chains partitioning the dining area from the pair of bar spaces located on either side.

The open plan kitchen features a custom designed spit rotisserie and is led by renowned head chef Paul Pereira. The casual clipboard menu, which features an American influence, offers a selection of individual and shared grazing plates, with starters such as subtle smoked duck with pickled melon and the scrumptious sloppy joe, dripping with pan juices. For mains, there are two ways to share, with whole flounder with fennel, clams, mussels and speck or succulent lamb shoulder in a robust copper pan, topped with tahini yoghurt, lemon and sumac. Individual plates range from tender pork belly with crispy sage, apple sauce and chilli-smoked fennel to grilled veal cutlet with parmesan and decadent bone marrow butter.

For dessert, dive into the indulgent Knickerbocker Glory, which arrives in a tall sundae glass overflowing with caramelised banana, chunks of honeycomb, tangy lemon curd, chocolate peanut butter brittle and banana ice cream. A sweet end.
