Dukes Coffee Roasters has opened by the water in Barangaroo. Though the name may be unfamiliar to Sydney Residents, Dukes set the benchmark in Melbourne for ethically sourced and traded coffee.

The Australian coffee roaster and shop launched the original Chapel Street, Prahran store in 2008 and opened a flagship on Flinders Lane before coming to Sydney. Situated in the southern lobby of Tower One, South by Dukes is what CBD workers have been waiting for.

South by Dukes Seats 30 to 40 people and has a similar look to its Melbourne siblings (both designed by Chris Connell). The coffee shop is fitted with American oak and a large marble bar. The menu changes seasonally depending on what beans are available. There’s black, filter, AeroPress and batch-brew coffee. House-made sandwiches, Bircher muesli, fruit salads and toasties are also available.

Dukes Coffee Roasters has a long list of environmental pledges. It adopts an ethical trading method of sourcing beans and it uses traceable bags of coffee from ethical plantations, such as Honduras organic coffee. It also works with organisations such as One Percent for the Planet, which donates one per cent of a company’s sales to selected charities. For Dukes, this year it is Belgian reforestation group WeForest, which has planted more than 30,000 trees this year alone.

“We chose to open in Barangaroo because the area is attempting to become the first inner-city precinct in the world that is climate positive and sustainably focused, and that’s what we’re all about,” says Robert Oechsle, marketing manager of Dukes.
