Illawarra Road, Marrickville: Asian restaurants, grocery shops and the train station. That’s what most people think of when you mention it. Titus Jones is here to change that perception.
Owner Merrick Webb (ex label manager at Warner music) has created a bar different to the usual Marrickville venue: live music, drinks and bar food. It’s somewhere to catch up with friends and enjoy a chat in a casual environment. "We want a place that is sophisticated and comfortable, where you are greeted by name when you arrive," he says.
Webb collaborated on the venture with friend and interior designer Kait Zegers, and is pleased with how close the final space is to his early vision.
Art by local artists Suede Fransisco and UniQue is on the walls. A playlist of hip-hop and soul sets the vibe. Cut off crystal decanter pendant lights give off a soft glow that makes you look good even before the drinks are served.
Bartender Shannon Kean’s cocktails include Black Magic with sazerac, Mr Black (a cold-drip coffee liqueur) and bitter orange. 'Alo Boys uses gin, aloe vera, cucumber and lime. And The English Rose combines gin, dry vermouth, apricot brandy, grenadine and lemon. Her cocktails are classic but fresh.
It seems people are already feeling at home. “They’ve been dropping in before they go to eat and then coming back when they’ve finished,” says Webb. “Guys that own and work in bars are coming in here after work.”
Currently serving mezze plates including olives and cheese, more choices will be on offer soon. “A twist on Greek street food will be our modus operandi – light enough to enjoy as a snack or as a meal,” says Webb. Pita breads and wraps, for example.
