Here’s a sunny little corner nook offering all the hospitality and love of your granny’s house, except with a hell of a lot more flare. It’s called Nan’s Place, and yep, it’s named after proprietor Jodie Johnson’s granny.

“Yes! It is named after my nan. Whenever you’re hungry you rock up to Nan’s place right? She’s the only one with food!”

And if this little gem is any reflection of that, then Nan’s food is good. Johnson has previously been seen at Reuben Hills and Campos, so the coffee here is top notch and the floor and kitchen team have a hefty history in the hospitality industry between them.

Being a Redfern local, Johnson was looking in the Surry Hills and Redfern area for a while, but when she laid eyes on the ex-sandwich shop just off the Bourke Street drag in Zetland, her plans changed. “As soon as I saw it, I knew it was perfect,” she says.

Having been vacant for a year or so, the space needed some TLC from the design team at Dear Henri in Chippendale before Johnson was ready to welcome diners. The whole process took around six months. Now refitted with fold down tables, boxed herbs and bright floor tiles, they’re now serving up Brickfields toast and Reuben Hills coffee to the hungry hoards, and Johnson says to keep an eye out for the ‘Pop Johnson’ (named after Nan’s other half) bacon and poached egg roll with Jack Daniel’s sauce. Also, Inca berry scones with Pepe Saya mascarpone get a lot of interest along with ruby grapefruit served with coconut sugar and almonds. Granny’s food might be good - but at Nan’s Place it’s even better.
