The concept for Shift Eatery has been in owner James Danaskos’s imagination for several years. A passionate vegan himself, Danaskos saw the need for a place that made it easy for people who want to consume fewer or no animal products.

“This place is a little bit more than a cafe or deli – it’s a way to express our philosophy and vision,” he says.

Customers can enjoy an all-day menu and purchase goods in-store. “I really want people to start forming a connection between delicious products and veganism, and to make the process as accessible as possible,” Danaskos says. In the deli you’ll find a large range of products including chocolate, ice-cream, spreads, cheese, milk, pies and soy-based meats (including schnitzels, duck and calamari).

Working alongside chef Juan Carlos Miranda (of Plant Gallery), Danaskos has come up with a menu that includes a range of toasties, sandwiches and bowls. The “Chicken” Club, The Reuben (created with house-made corned “beef”) and the Brekky Bun made with meaty pulled jackfruit, vegan egg and sweet chipotle mayo have all been popular so far.

Coffee is from Byron Bay roasters Marvel Street, and a big range of non-dairy milks is available, including creamy macadamia. There is also Melbourne’s Mork hot chocolate and teas from Tea Craft to go with vegan doughnuts, tarts and cakes supplied by Sydney-based sweet creators Treat Dreams and Houghnuts. “All the suppliers and makers are doing incredible things with vegan food. It’s amazing to be able to support the industry in this way,” Danaskos says.
