Mortdale local Dani Sheriff was keen to bring all the things she loved about Sydney’s cafe scene to her home suburb of Mortdale, so when she came across the right space she jumped at the opportunity to put her plans into action and opened Short Black Panther.
“We only opened on January 6,” says Sheriff, “but we’ve already had a big response from people who say there’s nothing else like it in the St George area, and that finally there’s somewhere to get good coffee.”
Bringing some much-needed fresh blood to Pitt Street, Sheriff and a select team did the interior themselves.
“We kept a lot of the original structure,” she says of the space with art deco glass windows. “I was walking past and I thought it looked interesting … it was just abandoned and empty, but I could see it had a kitchen.”
Leaving behind a past life as a personal assistant at Macquarie Bank, Sheriff says the details of the cafe are a collection of all the things that she has always wanted in a cafe, from children’s story-book covers on the menus and her own home baking (with help from mum), to the 5 Senses Crompton Road Blend coffee.
On the menu at this little green-and-white cafe you will find bacon, cheese and tomato muffins, mum’s date slice, wraps made to order, panther burgers, coconut-lime muffins and peanut-butter chocolate cake. There is also filter coffee of the week in addition to the espresso choices.
