The light and bright corner spot that houses Surry Hills’ newest cafe, Bread & Brew, is industrial-meets-Paris. Charcoal-grey walls and work shed-style chunky bar stools contrast with whitewashed chandeliers, petit wooden tables and dainty chairs. The wrap-around windows allow a great view of passing traffic, making it the perfect spot for people watching.
Owner Maggie Chantrangkul worked in hospitality for more than five years before deciding to open the cafe. "Over the years, I've seen first hand what other cafes were doing and wanted to offer something a bit different that would appeal to office workers and residents looking for a nice coffee spot during the weekends," she said.
To eat, there’s a good selection of items to go, which is a must-have for the office workers frequenting this busy food strip. Takeaways include pies, pastries and homemade sandwiches, as well as cute chocolate-covered pretzels and tarts topped with mini macarons.
The dine-in menu offers a wide selection for breakfast, from Sonoma bread and muesli, to the more decadent cinnamon French toast with strawberry, maple syrup and Serendipity ice-cream. There is also smoked ocean trout with rocket, avocado, tomato relish and poached eggs, and the Bread & Brew Bean – homemade baked beans with smoked bacon and chorizo sausage topped with a fried egg and crusty bread.
A traditional selection of salads and burgers make up the lunch staples, in addition to a very reasonably priced soup of the day. For a bigger appetite, there's a number of warming winter dishes including meatball ragu with truffle mash and asparagus and pork cutlet with apple slaw, apple sauce and whole-grain mustard.
Coffee comes courtesy of Genovese Coffee, tea is from T2 and there’s a nice selection of Emma and Tom juices for those who don't need the caffeine hit.
