As of today, tea time in the city no longer means a nondescript tea bag in a cup. At least at Barangaroo now that the second Rabbit Hole Tea Bar has opened there.
“We’re totally focused on serving people who are in a rush,” co-owner Corinne Smith says. “We’re gearing ourselves up for office workers who don’t have the luxury of a couple of hours at lunch time but who still want tea.”
Just in time for the roughest part of winter, Rabbit Hole’s winter drinks are spicy and warming. There is The berry bomb latte and the Fiery Temptress, a black tea, chilli and chocolate tea latte. Also try the spicy lemon and passionfruit mocktail called the Ginger Goddess. Unlike in Redfern, the Barangaroo shop offers bottled sparkling teas and the option to “boost your latte” with dirty, healthy and sweet takes: a shot of cold-brew coffee; turmeric and coconut oil; or couverture chocolate, respectively.
The focus on takeaway is evident in the menu. There are daily soups and salads as well as takeaway sandwiches, such as cheese, pancetta and black-tea relish, and Lapsoung Souchong-cured salmon on ciabatta. Favourites from Redfern are available, most notably the matcha granola, lavender shortbread and marshmallow of the day.
Matt Woods’s design channels a similar aesthetic to the Redfern location. The almost 50-square-metre space has two tables inside and five outside, as well as a small bench in the corner. Retail offerings are along one wall and there’s neon aplenty.
“We had some beautiful handmade tiles done and once the ceramicist made them, he dropped them – on purpose – and our tiler tiled them all back together,” Smith says. The gold cutlery has made the trip, as have the perforated boards on the walls – “all those elements which are really signature ‘us’,” says Smith.
The new spot seats only 20, but brewed tea is still served with a timer. Despite the bustle of Barangaroo, the new spot is as much about taking time for tea as it ever was.
