“My influences are drawn from the time I lived in a small village in France – Roanne,” explains Cafe Boheme’s owner and chef, Darren Taylor who previously held the role of executive chef at Buon Ricordo. “I was very fortunate to start my apprenticeship in classical French food. I spent a year working at La Maison Troisgros (a 3-star Michelin restaurant) before returning to help Tony Bilson launch Bilson’s.”

The kind of chairs you’d expect to find in a Parisian bistro line the yellow terrace’s courtyard, alongside a wrought iron fence and leafy greenery, contrasted with sprays of graffiti on the walls. While the barista bar displays glimpses of Paris’ Centre Pompidou, framed vintage opera posters reflect in mirrors and tower above the intimate dining room.

“Kellett Street seemed the perfect spot to bring a few things that I love about the cafes in Paris – good food and coffee. Where we can, we’re trying to be organic,” says Taylor, who aims to make as much as he can onsite, including petite pots of duck parfait and daily baked sweet treats like palmiers and a frangipani and rhubarb tarts.

The French-inspired menu lists timeless favourites like croque madame alongside a folded omelette filled with mushrooms, Gruyere, chives and ricotta. Local producers like Bronte’s Iggy’s Bread are also made the most of here. Coffee comes via Double Roasters, tea via Tea Drop and it’s hard to go past the dulce de leche milkshake.

Taylor hopes the cosy terrace will become an inviting wine bar for diners to stop by at night, while take home meals are also available at Café Boheme, like beef cheeks braised in red wine - packed and ready to go in the fridge for a quick fix.
