If you’re going to put in all that effort to run (or walk) to Bondi this Sunday for the City2Surf, the least we can do is create a guide to things to enjoy once you get there. Here’s our pick of what to do in Bondi after the race.
Wash it Off
It may be winter, but a dip in the ocean will help soothe your muscles and wake you up – there’s nothing more refreshing than the salty sea. The North Bondi Wally Weeks Tidal Pool has been freshly dug out for a crystal-clear dip.
Once you’ve made it over the finish line, it’ll probably still be early in the morning. Stroll to the south Bondi cliffs and grab a coffee or something more hydrating at Icebergs Terrace Cafe and enjoy that gorgeous view. Or stay around the centre of the beach and head to the new-look Harry’s Bar & Dining to grab a coffee from the kiosk area, or take a seat for its all-day menu, complete with gluten- and sugar-free options. Harry’s is putting on a race-day special of sumac lamb skewers with hydrating watermelon and watercress – full of antioxidants. A little further along in North Bondi you’ll find Porch, and while last year it was only doing takeaway coffee on race day, this year its staying open all day.
If the race has wrung you dry join the rehydration party at The Bucket List. Right on the finish line and with a giant paella pan on the go, it will be offering coconut water mojitos with a coastal deep-house soundtrack. For something sans alcohol head to California-inspired juice bar Cali Press. It will be selling its full range of cold-pressed juices, smoothies, elixirs and tonics, but for race day it will also serve post-race muscle recovery smoothies along with a super hydration juices.
Drop into La Piadina for a truly Italian experience courtesy of brothers Damiano and Fausto Zizioli. Grab a handmade round flatbread, scorched on the hotplate and filled with buffalo mozzarella, bresaola or pancetta, perfect to pick up in one hand while you grab a coffee with the other. Or head to Bondi Hardware and take a load off in the sunny courtyard to enjoy a race-day beer-battered barramundi slider and a cold cider.
Check out The Hub
Get to know the newest kids on the block and wander up to the new Hall Street food and dining precinct at The Hub development. You can satisfy every level of race recovery here, from pizza and coffee to ice cream and cocktails. The food and drink offerings include: • Outrageous gelato from Gelato Messina • Specialty coffee at Sensory Lab • Cocktails and tacos at Mr. Moustache • Pizza and carb-loading at Da Orazio Pizza + Porchetta • Sweet Italian treats (and famous ricotta cake) at Papa Pasticceria
Escape the Madness
If you’re done with the craziness of the post-race beachfront, head up the road for beer and bowls at the updated Bondi Bowling Club. Non-members do need a member to sign in, but it’s worth it for a signature rib eye with hand-cut chips and your choice of sauce.
