Sydney’s beloved Argentinean grill, Porteño may not have had the most encouraging start to 2015, with the wrong kind of flames setting ablaze their Surry Hills kitchen and BBQ pit just last week. A portion of Cleveland Street was closed down while a fire within the two-hatted restaurant took one hour and 50 firefighters to control and eventually put out. Thankfully no Porteño patrons or staff were harmed during the blaze, but the spectacular two-storey space has been closed ever since.

“Unfortunately we still don’t have an exact date that we will be back in the building on Cleveland Street,” a spokesperson for the restaurant told Broadsheet. The Porteño team however, has refused to lie in wait, or deny Sydney the opportunity to dine with them in the meantime. “We can confirm that while repairs are taking place we will have a pop-up site in Rushcutters Bay.”

Setting up shop at 10 Nield Avenue (the site of the former Nield Avenue and Rushcutters restaurants), ‘Popteño’ will be serving a special menu of Argentinean bistro and regional classics. The bar will feature a short list of summer cocktails, bar snacks and a selection of the best from the regular Porteño wine list.

Popteño will appear at 10 Neild Avenue, Rushcutters Bay from January 28, taking bookings for all party sizes.
