There’s so much more to Mexican cuisine than tacos. And at Playa Takeria they’re doing it with style. Taking up residence in what was previously Fish Face on Darlinghurst Road, the colourful new cantina has a huge, vibrant, street-side mural of Freda Kahlo by Argentinean artist Skullavera. Chef Alejandro Urbina (previously of Rojo Rocket and Grup Habita) serves Tulum tostaditas with fish ceviche; taco don pastor of adobo pork with pineapple; and grilled chicken burritos with puebla rice and chipotle salsa.

The colourful, tropical look and feel of Playa (as well as the name) is based on the traditional taquerias of Mexico, but take particular influence from the beachside city of Playa del Carmen on the Caribbean Sea. Since opening, the colourful spot has been filled every night, so it’s good news that takeaway and home delivery to the local area will be available in coming weeks. But in the meantime dine in and drink up with cocktails including the Mezcalina (mezcal, agave syrup, lime and a secret ingredient) or the Playa del Carmen Paloma (tequila blanco, soda, salt rim and lime). Work your way through the selection of tequilas and mezcals, or sample the wine and beer list covering Argentina, Spain, Chile and Mexico. The plan is for the internal artwork to change regularly, with new artists featuring every few months.
