After two years, Mark Best’s Pei Modern at the Four Seasons Hotel has closed.

The news comes just eight months after the closure of his award-winning restaurant Marque.

Competition for the city’s diners is stronger than ever. Long Chim, Hubert, Mercado, No 1. Bent Street and Indu have all opened in the CBD in the past couple of years.

When Pei Modern first opened, diners jumped at the chance to secure a table. With 135 covers on opening night, it was a true testament to the team, but it’s a whole other challenge keeping the demand going.

Mark Best will be involved with Pei Modern’s successor, helping the Four Seasons shape the new concept. The space is currently undergoing renovations, with plans to reopen in April this year.

Sydney interior design firm Luchetti Krelle will take care of the redesign.

Best is no longer involved with Melbourne’s Pei Modern, which opened in 2012 and is also being reinvented.

In the interim, Four Seasons has opened a pop-up restaurant on level two called Tables, open from breakfast through to dinner.
