Just a few short steps from Newtown station, yet a giant leap for Sydney’s music scene, a new inner west venue has got the whole city buzzing. The Newtown Social Club, overseen by the same team behind Melbourne’s famed Northcote Social Club, opened its doors in early May, with the cavernous downstairs bar – all exposed brick, original tiling, industrial lighting and a gravity-defying vertical garden – marking phase one of the launch, before the opening of the adjoined band venue later this year.

With Sydney’s live music options scarce and soon to be ever more so (if the rumours are true), such new blood brings a timely boost to the local music scene. NSC manager Jack Martin says gig-goers can expect plenty from the launch. “This venue is more intimate than others in the city and we’ll be putting on those bands who are just starting to realise that they’re professional acts, plus a lot of Sydney’s top talent,” he says. “We want to make it a great experience for everyone, from the punters in the bar to the bands loading in, the sound guys and the promoters.”

And when asked about the venue’s similarities to its Northcote sibling, the answer is clear. “This is a social club,” says Martin. “We want it to have an inclusive atmosphere for everyone from 60-year-old locals to families and those who have just finished work.” Helping fuel this community feel will be a wide range of good-quality, cheap and cheerful food including pizzas, chilli dogs, chips and nachos.

So why choose Newtown? “It’s a cultural and artistic hub,” says Martin, confirming what many have felt for a long time. “Looking across the whole of Sydney, it was the most logical place by far. This place will be made by the crowd.”

Judging by the vibrant collection of patrons filling the bar so far, this particular corner of Newtown is in very good hands.
