Mirroring the Bourbon Street Mardi Gras of New Orleans, complete with festoon lighting, street performers, dancers and of course the jazz, blues and soul music for which the city is famous, Cockatoo Island’s The Island Bar will be transformed this weekend.

Jump off the short ferry ride to Cockatoo Island and soak up some old-fashioned Southern hospitality. Bartenders will showcase traditional bourbon cocktails hailing from New Orleans and visitors can take part in Maker's Mark masterclasses on the French Quarter Balcony or enjoy the classic Mint Juleps on offer.

Food carts will serve unique Louisiana fare including soft-shell crab Po' boys, gumbo, and spicy Cajun chicken wings. And for dessert: Banana fritters dripping with cinnamon sauce and warm banana crepes peppered with pecans.

This carnival extravaganza is free and is on from Saturday March 8 to Sunday March 9.

Getting There Cockatoo Island is a 12-minute ferry trip from Circular Quay.
