Geoff and Kristi Bannister and Tony Plunkett have taken over the former Barrio Chino venue in Potts Point and opened a cafe-cum-restaurant. It’s serving On It Burgers, Dr Dough Donuts and a selection of Mug Life dishes.

“There are a lot of burger shops around Sydney but I don’t think there’s anything that has a cafe, doughnuts and burgers in one,” says Geoff.

Mug Life and On It Burger have been sharing the kitchen since August when they collaborated on a delivery-only, UberEats-focused business operating out of the old Barrio site. The venue was already the hub for both businesses, so when the opportunity to expand to the dining area came up, it was a no-brainer.

After operating only through UberEats, Bannister understands the demand for all-day dishes and coffee for people who don’t operate on a “nine-to-five schedule”.

Patrons can grab a grilled-cheese sandwich with truffle mayo or a milkshake from Mug Life’s upstairs cafe until 10pm. And a burger with egg, bacon, bacon jam and Tabasco from the On It area below until midnight.

There’s a fresh slab of turf in the back courtyard, DJ decks and an indoor basketball hoop. Visitors can enter through the back laneway, and dogs are welcome on the turfed patio.

“I’d really like to do a giant claw machine with a random bunch of retro things that people can win,” says Bannister.
