There seems to be movement in Rosebery – well that’s what Konrad Ries, Phillip Davenport and Adam Flipp, the guys behind Mentmore & Morley think, anyway.

“There wasn’t much here at the time, so Adam and Phillip came up with the idea and brought me in as the chef,” says head chef and co-owner Ries. “We’re making everything from scratch, making sure that we responsibly source all our food as much as we can.”

Set on the corner of Mentmore and Morley avenues, this bright cafe, run by Connor Canham ex-Bondi’s Best, The Corner House and Porch and Parlour, offers mostly health-focused breakfast and lunches, with a few not-so-clean options too.

Ries serves up a dish of bolognese mince on Iggy’s sourdough toast, parmesan cheese and poached eggs. Other favourites include the “sprouted avocado” – a plate of avocado, hummus, labneh and turmeric olive oil on sprouted bread. There’s also spanner crab linguine with chilli, coriander and shallots.

With four New Zealanders behind the venue, their Kiwi hospitality is taken very seriously.

Urban Future was behind the interior. The space is lofty and clean with large timber tables, brass light fittings and pale grey hexagonal tiles.

Having just received a liquor license, the boys are serving up breakfast Margaritas with homemade marmalade and Bloody Mary’s, though they hope to venture into dinner services down the line.
