The Mayor Bar & Dining, run by husband and wife team Amy and Jorge Marrero, is the couple’s first venture into hospitality, and there’s a clear vision here. The New York feel of the high-ceilinged space (aided by a photographic mural skyline and Jorge’s NY family roots) is all smoky greys, exposed brickwork and images of NYC’s mayor. With its central bar, tight menu (keep an eye out for the southern wings with blue-cheese dip) and inviting chesterfield couches, The Mayor has stepped up in slick style to fill a gap on the Cremorne strip.

The cocktail list is full of signatures like the ‘sneaky sneaky’, designed with the help of Jason Crawley (of Hilton’s Zeta Bar fame). “We do the classics,” says Jorge Marerro, “but we wanted more. We didn’t only want what everyone else was doing – we wanted our own signatures.”

A family tragedy was the driving force behind the Marreros’ decision to move into hospitality, prompting them to make the most of every opportunity and so far the response from locals has been enthusiastic. Whilst the location was one of the first out of the many the Marreros looked at, the ex-post office space was also the one that eventually provided what they were looking for.

“We looked on the whole North Shore corridor,” says Marrero. “Not only was it about finding the right location, but we wanted a space that ticked boxes, that was sizeable enough that people didn’t feel it was crowded and they needed to move on. If they’re having a good time, we want people to feel that they can stay and there’re options.

“And it had to allow for the bar in the centre of the room. People can watch and chat, and we really wanted that. The bar was what we wanted to deliver.”

Cocktails and a snack before the movies anyone? There’s even the promise of a courtyard for the warmer months to come.
