Lid & Jar only opened its first cafe at Rhodes in June, but it has had such success with its specialty coffee, freshly baked cakes and fresh pressed juices that it has already extended into a second outlet in Chatswood.

The cafe has joined the upgrade of the Victoria Avenue concourse area. The split-level space is filled with polished concrete, raw brick and plenty of hanging jam-jar lights, but it’s the coffee that raises the bar. Lid & Jar’s house blend hails from Northern Beaches roasters, the Coffee Brothers. It also has rotating guest roasters, starting with beans from Melbourne’s Proud Mary. There’s a focus on alternative brewing methods, with cold drip, aeropress, chemex and syphon all in the mix. But it’s hard to miss the shiny new Slayer espresso machine gracing the front window.

The breakfast menu ranges from scrambled eggs with taleggio or sourdough toast with homemade peanut butter, right through to wholemeal waffles with burnt orange, figs and pecans, or smoked spec with tomato oil and poached eggs. For lunch and dinner there is southern fried chicken and salt-and-pepper soft-shell crab sliders vying with burgers, hand-rolled potato gnocchi and tuna fillets with truss tomatoes. There’s also the range of daily cold-pressed juices made with local fruits or the baked in-house cakes, muffins and slices.

The downstairs level is all about street-side tables and the coffee bar, but the upper level unfolds onto the community green in the centre of the concourse. On a sunny day people sprawl in the sunshine on the grass or sit at the outdoor tables under an extensive awning. Perfect for the summer days ahead.
