Lentil as Anything founder Shanaka Fernando believes the new mocktail bar he's launched above the Newtown restaurant will allow guests to enjoy, "delicious drinks and a great atmosphere while avoiding the negative effects of alcohol and donating to an important cause.” Lentil on the Rocks is an extension of Fernando’s by now well-known philosophy: community-focused and sustainable food and drink practices that offer alternative dining experiences across Sydney and Melbourne.
The move to open upstairs was a natural progression for Fernando. “When we acquired the new restaurant in Newtown, it had available space upstairs which was set up as a bar, so the infrastructure was already in place. The restaurant also sits next door to a pub so we thought it would be a fun contrast to open a mocktail bar there,” he says.
Lentil on the Rocks will be headed by team member and mixologist Daniel Hollen, and will offer a range of mocktails with lime and rosemary; kumquat, plum and pepper; and agave-soaked pear with ginger, with more flavours yet to be announced. The bar will operate on the same system as its sister restaurants, with customers encouraged to donate an amount based on their experience and financial ability.
