Justin Hemmes’s reign over Sydney’s pub scene has expanded. He’s just bought Mascot’s Tennyson Hotel.

In a record-breaking sale, Hemmes acquired the Botany Road pub for $37.5 million, the largest amount ever paid for a Sydney hotel in a public auction.

This popular local is one of New South Wales’s largest gaming venues, with 30 machines.

Merivale’s rollcall includes The Newport in the north; Coogee Pavilion in the east; a number of CBD locations; and new openings on Oxford Street, Fred’s and Charlie Parker’s.

Hemmes’s first inner-west venue, the revamped Queen Victoria Hotel in Enmore, will open next week.

An official statement from Merivale says: “Continuing its program of expansion into thriving communities across Sydney. The hotel joins the Merivale portfolio in what has been the fastest period of growth in the group’s history.”

Further details and plans for The Tennyson Hotel will be announced soon.

This venue will be unaffected by the CBD’s lock-out restrictions.
