Those who have visited the charming town of Leura, perched in the Blue Mountains, will be familiar with the handcrafted offerings of Josophan’s Fine Chocolates. Having successfully operated her store and chocolate laboratory in Leura’s main street since 2005, founder and chocolatier Jodie Van der Velden opened her second boutique in the heart of the Sydney CBD earlier this week.
Located on the ground floor of the restored art-deco Charles Plaza building (directly behind the Louis Vuitton building), Josophan’s invites customers to experience the exquisite array of handcrafted chocolates and products that have been attracting visitors to Leura for years.
With training from renowned institutions in Melbourne, Paris and Chicago, Van der Velden’s commitment to chocolate extends from her journeys to cacao plantations in the Caribbean and South America, to holding tasting appreciation workshops and hands-on truffle-making classes in her Leura laboratory. In 2009, Van der Velden received the prestige award of Australian Callebaut Chocolate Dessert Champion, after competing at the Hunter Valley Gardens Chocolate Festival.
Fitted with glistening chandeliers and white provincial furniture and filled with cellophane bundles tied with satin ribbon, chocolate lovers can expect to be tantalised by Fair Trade certified Belgian couverture chocolate as well as naturally flavoured infusions such as Mayan chilli, Tahitian vanilla bean, lime and basil or honey and lavender, just to name a few.
We also recommend trying Josophan’s signature ice cream topping, available in chocolate, strawberry, orange and caramel flavours, the decadent chilli drinking chocolate and candied orange peels dipped in dark Fair Trade chocolate.
