After just under a year serving Dee Why locals all day, Buttercup is gone. JB & Sons opened in its place in late November.

“It’s a big thing to rebrand in your first year and we were not naïve about the fact Buttercup didn’t work,” says co-owner George McLean. “It just wasn’t working as fast as it needed to.”

McLean and business partner Paul Fraser also own JB & Sons in Freshwater. “The plan was always to do another JB & Sons, but we didn’t think we’d be doing one so soon, or so close,” McLean says.

Only the Papi burger remains from the Buttercup menu. The rest of the dishes reflect the other JB & Sons. There’s the Don – with two meat patties, triple cheese, double bacon, an onion ring and jalapenos; The Big Cheese – a burger with a patty entirely made of cheese; and a fried-chicken burger with chipotle mayo and chilli salt. There’s also a variety of smaller snacks, such as cheeseburger spring rolls and jalapeno poppers.

“Our jalapeno poppers are the best ever,” says McLean. “If it was a county fair, I would take them as our show piece.”

4 Pines is on tap, Margaritas are made to order and there’s happy hour every day from 4pm–6pm. The fit-out is much the same as Buttercup’s. There’s a new, blue lick of paint and a wall separating the main dining room from the kitchen. A pool table and flat screen TVs streaming American sports complete the burger and booze brief.
