After wowing Newtown with fried chicken, oyster po' boys and spectacularly over-the-top desserts, Gregory Llewellyn and Naomi Hart, the husband and wife team behind Hartsyard, are branching out. They're opening The Gretz, a new bar on the Enmore Road strip just up the street from Hartsyard.

Like Hartsyard, The Gretz will have an American feel (Llewellyn is originally from the US). “One thing we love about bars back in the US is table service, so we’ll be stealing that concept,” says Hart. She describes the long, thin space on Enmore Road as reminiscent of Manhattan bars she and Llewellyn used to visit when they were dating.

Responsible for the new bar’s look is Hartsyard’s designer, Ashley Couch. The fit-out will feature reclaimed wood, stark surfaces and a long bar. Much of the construction has been carried out by Llewellyn himself, with help from family and friends.

There is no word yet on if the Pickle Back Martini from Hartsyard will make an appearance on The Gretz’s cocktail list, with Hart saying only that there will be a selection of beers on tap, sparkling wines and classic and reworked cocktails. As for food, the plans are for eight to 10 items on a seafood-focused menu.

And the name? Hart explains: “Gregory’s brother Pete is visiting from the US and we must credit him with coming up with it. He reminded us that their maternal great-grandfather owned a brewery in Philadelphia called Gretz Brewery.”

The Gretz is slated to open in mid February.
