After a six week renovation, The ground floor of The Sheaf has been unveiled as The Garden Bar. What was once an attractive but standard beer garden has been transformed into a mystical space.
Director of operations Bede Hunt says escapism is the goal. “The idea [was] to fall into the rabbit hole, in a sense. To create a space with romantic garden vibes, a mossy trellis, beautiful greenery twisting up thatched walls, there will be floating lights – it will be very pretty.”
The bistro bar serves a typical pub menu but with an, “injection of lightness, freshness and seasonality.” These new elements will be the work of head chef Matt Weller, previously of Wildfire Restaurant.
The cocktails are light and sweet, too. The Garden Spritz combines St Germaine, limoncello, cucumber, strawberry, lemon and ginger ale. For sweet- toothed drinkers there is the Popcorn Paloma; popcorn-infused tequila, lime, grape fruit soda and caramel popcorn.
The upgrade was fitted out by Alexander & Co, which worked on Watsons Bay Beach Club, The Morrison and Daniel San. “Jeremy Bull of Alexander & Co’s work is incredible, and we felt we needed someone like that to do The Sheaf justice.”
Hunt says the new space will impress loyal customers, “They’ll love it. We’re giving back to the community, it’s just what Double Bay needs to complement what’s already going on.”
