While Sydney’s cafe scene continues to burst with new openings, these five new cafes have really caught our eye. From Japanese to Lebanese-inspired, they’re serving food outside of the breakfast box – and that’s something to get excited about.

Devon Barangaroo
The guys behind Devon in Surry Hills and the now closed Danks Street outpost have hit Barangaroo’s growing food precinct. This new CBD venue, in a light, timber-laden space, features inventive Japanese-style sandwiches and jaffles. It also serves Devon’s famous matcha soft-serve, to which hot chips can be added for an extra punch. Or try the affogato soft-serve and iced orange-chocolate mocha.

Meraki Merchants
Parramatta’s latest opening is a Lebanese-inspired fusion cafe. It is only small, but this bright and crisp space turns out a lot of interesting food. A rotating jaffle menu features a cheesy sandwich with Levantine sausage, and a classic granola with cardamom. Owner Toufik Chami is also making rosewater-flavoured Milo and a cardamom-turmeric latte.

Kentaro
Kentaro is a new Japanese fusion cafe in Surry Hills from the owners of Redfern’s Oratnek Cafe. You won’t find any eggs or avocado on toast, but instead chicken tsukune (meatballs) with quinoa, miso and sesame salad. Oratnek favourites are still available, from the signature katsu sandwich to matcha French toast and cream puffs.

YOUENI
YOUENI has opened up in Surry Hills. This wholefoods cafe is serious about ethically sourced, organic and homemade products – everything except the bread and milk is made in-house. With an entirely gluten-free menu, there is crunchy muesli, raw cheesecake and salted caramel teacake. The salad bowls are actually filling, with pumpkin, turmeric chickpeas, broccoli, roasted garlic and a citrus cashew relish.

Double Cross Espresso Bar
Italian-Japanese fusion is the name of the game for this new Crows Nest cafe. While Japan may not be famous for pasta, Double Cross is serving up mentaiko spaghetti with marinated cod roe and an egg. The menu also features a karaage burger stuffed with macaroni, and a confit salmon fillet with a 63-degree egg and creamed spinach. There are two styles of tiramisu on offer – one a rich, classic style, and the other a combination of vanilla and matcha. Double Cross is also the only cafe to receive its daily supply of beans from Edition Coffee Roasters, so you can expect a fine brew.
